Cedar City 48-hour Shootout Film Competition
Calling all filmmakers!
In 2024, the Utah Film Commission is celebrating 100 years of being America's Film Set. With Cedar City being instrumental in the film industry's creation and development as the "Birthplace of Filming in Utah", Visit Cedar City · Brian Head Tourism Bureau is commemorating the occasion with a 48-hour Film Shootout Competition as a kick-off event for the state-wide celebration.
Filmmakers will be prompted to create a short film within 48 hours inspired by a historically significant film shot in Utah. Find additional information and rules included below.
Rules & Requirements
1. TEAMS AND PARTICIPANTS:
Film submissions can be from an individual or a team.
Limit of one submission per individual or team.
Competition is open to professional and amateur filmmakers

2. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: January 23, 2024
3. FILMING PERIOD:
The Shootout begins at midnight (Mountain time) January 26, 2024 and ends at 11:59 pm on January 28th, 2024.
Registered teams will receive a prompt at midnight with the details for key items that must be included in
their submission.
The 48-hour clock starts when you receive the prompt.
All pre-production, filming, and editing must take place within the 48-hour period.
No footage shot before the prompt is to be used in films.
4. THEME:
Films should follow the theme which will be provided in the prompt sent out on January 26th.
The theme will be inspired by a historically significant film shot in Utah.
Interpretation of the theme is open to creativity.
5. DURATION:
Films should be between 2 to 3 minutes in length, including credits.
Films that go over 3 minutes will not be accepted.
6. EQUIPMENT:
Participants are responsible for their own equipment, including cameras, sound, and editing tools.
7. ORIGINAL CONTENT:
All content, including music and visuals, must be original or used with proper permissions.
No stock footage is allowed in the films.
8. LOCATIONS:
Films can be shot at any location, but the teams must obtain permission when necessary for the property.
9. SUBMISSION:
Submit final videos by sending via email to CedarCityFilmComp@gmail.com
Films should be submitted within 48 hours of receiving the festival prompt as noted above.
Films need to be submitted in a MP4, 1920 x 1080 format.
Films need to be submitted as a link to this email address.
The films must not be viewed publicly before the end of the competition.
10. JUDGING:
Films will be judged based on creativity, adherence to the theme, technical quality, storytelling
and inclusion of the elements provided in the competition prompt.
11. COPYRIGHT:
By participating, filmmakers grant the festival organizers the right to screen their films in a public setting.
12. FILM PREMIER
Five finalists will be selected to have their film’s premiered on February 3, 2024 at an awards screening and
celebration at 6 p.m at the Cedars Hotel in Cedar City, Utah. Following the screenings, a grand prize of $1,000
will be awarded to the best film along with other cash prizes.
