- “Sigiriya” meaning the Lion’s Rock was a fortress of an ancient king named ‘Kashyapa’ who chose this rock to build his palace after he went into hiding to escape the wrath of his brother who sought to kill Kashyapa for murdering his father, King Dhatusena. This is a world heritage. Sigiriya is 155 km away from Negombo and on the way at Kurunegala city you will see the massive statue of meditating Lord Buddha located on the top of a huge rock called Athagala (elephant rock).Passing Kurunegala you will be traveling through two forests, one large and the other, a smaller one on either side of the road. Mostly, commercially valuable jak trees and mahogany trees cover the entire jungle. Thereafter you will appreciate the view of green beautiful rice fields stretching as far as the eye could see.
- No visitor to Sri Lanka would miss climbing the ancient granite stairs to the top of Sigiriya Rock. Before reaching the top the visitors will see the ‘Mirror Wall’ and the world renowned frescos of Sigiriya. On top are the ruins of the ancient palace, bathing ponds for queens and princesses and others royualties. Looking below from the top of the rock is the enchanting view of the surrounding green jungle. Entry tickets should be bought before climbing the rock. For lunch you may have the option to order a Sri Lankan menu and thereafter proceed to view the ancient Cave Temple of Dambulla, the largest cave temple in Sri Lanka. This too is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ascending the granite rock and entering the cave, one may appreciate the unique paintings of Buddha images and of ancient kings on the ceiling. You may also visit Minneriya Wild Reserve, have an elephant ride and also study the life style of villagers living in the rural and remote villages in this part of the country.
